NCAHP Launches Competency-Based DMLT Curriculum for Allied Health Education

Why in news

The National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP) has introduced a competency-based Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT) curriculum, effective from academic year 2026-27, with mandatory implementation from 2027-28. This aligns with the Union Budget 2026-27's vision to produce an additional one lakh allied healthcare professionals over the next five years.

Background

NCAHP is a statutory body under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, established to regulate and maintain standards of education and professional services in the allied and healthcare sector in India. Previously, on 15 October 2025, NCAHP had issued competency-based curricula for BMLS and MMLS degrees, to be implemented from 2026-27.

The 16 disciplines include Applied Psychology & Behavioural Health, Physiotherapy, Optometry, Nutrition & Dietetics, Medical Radiology & Imaging Technology, Radiotherapy, Dialysis Therapy Technology, Health Information Management, Anaesthesia & Operation Theatre Technology, Physician Associate, Occupational Therapy, Emergency Medical Technologist (Paramedic), Burn Care Technologist, Advanced Care Paramedic, Respiratory Technology, Medical & Psychiatric Social Work, Medical Physics, and Nuclear Medicine Technology.

  8. This initiative supports the Union Budget 2026-27 announcement to create one lakh additional allied healthcare professionals in five years.

  9. NCAHP is engaging with universities, colleges, and stakeholders for smooth implementation and has conducted eight national webinars for awareness.
