Why in news
On International Day of Older Persons 2025, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment inaugurated five senior citizen homes across five states and signed an MoU with Birla Open Minds Foundation. These initiatives strengthen institutional care and collaborative welfare for the elderly under the Atal Vayo Abhyuday Yojana (AVYAY).
Background
The government has been implementing AVYAY to ensure dignity, security, and well-being of senior citizens. The International Day of Older Persons is observed annually on October 1.
Key facts
Five senior citizen homes were virtually inaugurated in Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand.
An MoU was signed with Birla Open Minds Foundation to promote collaborative initiatives for elderly welfare.
An interactive educational game named 'Naitik Patham' was launched to foster intergenerational dialogue.
A QR code-based initiative for grandparent-teacher meetings was introduced to enhance senior citizens' involvement in children's education.
Intergenerational mela programs were held in Jabalpur, Badaun, Chhatarpur, Navgaon, Biaora, and Mount Abu.
Yoga sessions and health camps were organized in collaboration with S-Vyasa, Bengaluru.
A special session on the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 was conducted with NALSA.
A cultural program 'Aradhana' was organized to encourage active participation of senior citizens.
The initiatives were part of the Atal Vayo Abhyuday Yojana (AVYAY).
