Why in news
The government informed Parliament that India now has 52,718 public EV charging stations, including 16,561 fast chargers for cars. This update comes as part of efforts to reduce range anxiety and expand EV infrastructure under FAME-II and PM E-Drive schemes.
Background
India has been promoting electric mobility through schemes like FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles) and PM E-Drive. The Ministry of Heavy Industries and Ministry of Power have issued guidelines to standardize charging infrastructure.

Setting up EV charging stations has been made an unlicensed activity to encourage private participation.
The information was provided by Minister of State for Heavy Industries, Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma, in Lok Sabha.
