Deepwater Drilling Begins in Mahanadi Basin for Hydrocarbon Assessment
UPSC / SSC current affairs note · Security
Why in news
India's first deepwater appraisal well in the Mahanadi offshore basin was spudded on July 25, 2026, marking a key step to assess hydrocarbon reserves. This initiative aims to boost domestic oil and gas production, reducing India's heavy reliance on imports.
Background
India imports nearly 90% of its crude oil and about half of its natural gas demand. The government has implemented policy reforms like HELP, OALP, and revenue-sharing to attract investment in exploration. The Mahanadi basin is one of India's most prospective offshore regions.
Key facts
The well named MN-DWN18-1-HD is the first of four planned deepwater appraisal wells in the Mahanadi basin.
Petroleum minister Hardeep Singh Puri flagged off the drilling, calling it a new chapter in India's energy security.
India imports nearly 90% of its crude oil and about half of its natural gas demand.
Policy reforms include Hydrocarbon Exploration and Licensing Policy (HELP), Open Acreage Licensing Programme (OALP), and a revenue-sharing regime.
Nearly 99% of previously restricted offshore 'No-Go' areas have been opened for exploration.
About 81% of India's active exploration acreage has been awarded since 2014.
Under OALP, 172 exploration blocks covering ~3.8 lakh sq km have been awarded, with committed investments over $4.3 billion.
During 2025-26, around 674 exploration wells were drilled, and five new hydrocarbon discoveries were made.
Initiatives like Mission Anveshan, National Seismic Programme, and National Data Repository support geoscientific data generation.
