The four-day multinational maritime security training exercise, Operation Southern Readiness 26-2, commenced at Southern Naval Command, Kochi on 20 July 2026. This is the first time the exercise is being held in India, marking a significant milestone in the growing cooperation between the Indian Navy and the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF).
Background
Operation Southern Readiness is a multinational maritime security training program conducted under the Combined Task Force 154 (CTF 154), which is the dedicated training task force of the CMF. Currently, CTF 154 is led by the Indian Navy.
Key facts
Operation Southern Readiness 26-2 is a four-day multinational maritime security training program held at Southern Naval Command, Kochi from 20 July 2026.
It is organized by Southern Naval Command under the aegis of Combined Task Force 154 (CTF 154), led by the Indian Navy, in collaboration with the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF).
The exercise involves 254 participants from 26 countries, supported by 74 instructors, four international organizations, and subject matter experts.
This is the first time Operation Southern Readiness is being conducted in India.
CTF 154 is the dedicated training task force of the CMF and is currently under Indian Navy leadership.
The exercise focuses on enhancing capability, interoperability, and professional readiness of partner nations through multinational maritime training.
Day one activities included ship handling, navigation, celestial navigation, maritime distress communication systems, damage control, and firefighting using Indian Navy simulators.
A session by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) discussed maritime security threats in the Red Sea and Western Indian Ocean.
The exercise underscores the Indian Navy-CMF partnership in promoting regional capacity building, interoperability, and collective maritime security.
