The Army Chief launched an indigenously developed Extreme Weather Grade (XWG) diesel, a joint effort by the Indian Army and oil marketing companies. This fuel enhances mobility and operational capability of combat and logistics vehicles in extreme climates, marking a step towards Atmanirbhar Bharat.
Background
Traditional diesel thickens at very low temperatures, clogging fuel filters and hampering vehicle operations in high-altitude and snowy terrains. The XWG diesel addresses this issue and remains effective up to minus 42 degrees Celsius.
Key facts
The XWG diesel was launched by Army Chief General Dheeraj Seth in New Delhi on 31 July 2026.
It is developed jointly by the Indian Army and oil marketing companies.
The fuel is effective up to minus 42 degrees Celsius.
It is compliant with BS-6 standards and IS-1460:2025 specifications.
It can be used in the current Indian Army vehicle fleet without any engine modification or re-standardization.
The fuel eliminates processes previously required to keep vehicles operational during severe winters.
It will also benefit civilian users in high-altitude and extreme cold regions.
The solution was developed within one year.
