The Ministry of Culture informed Lok Sabha about the progress of the Gyan Bharatam Mission, including the survey of over 1.19 crore manuscripts and the use of AI technologies for digitization and access. The mission aims to preserve India's manuscript heritage and make it accessible via the Gyan Bharatam web portal.
Background
The National Manuscript Survey was launched under the Gyan Bharatam Mission across all states and UTs to identify and document manuscript collections, repositories, and custodians representing various languages and scripts. No district-wise targets were set for survey and registration.

Over 1.19 crore manuscripts have been identified during the survey under Gyan Bharatam Mission.
The Gyan Bharatam web portal uses AI-enabled technologies: Large Language Script Model (LLSM), OCR, Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR), script recognition, semantic search, and machine-assisted translation.
The AI-powered interface 'Gyan Mitram' integrates manuscript images, transcripts, and translations for intelligent interpretation, contextualization, and exploration.
BharatGPT has enabled 'Conversational AI from Manuscripts' on the portal, converting manuscript heritage into AI-ready, machine-readable knowledge.
The 'Talk to Manuscript' feature provides multilingual and multi-modal access via text, audio, and voice-based interaction.
'Pandulipi Darpana' is an AI tool on the portal that allows users to upload or select a digitized manuscript image for AI-assisted script identification, transliteration, and translation.
Access to digital copies is facilitated as per applicable laws and rights of custodians; legally permitted manuscripts may be made available via the National Digital Repository.
The information was provided by Union Minister of Culture and Tourism Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat in a written reply in Lok Sabha on 27 July 2026.
No district-wise targets were fixed for survey and registration of manuscripts under the mission.
