Why in news

The Ministry of MSME is implementing PM Vishwakarma Yojana in West Bengal in collaboration with the state government, following the formation of state and district monitoring committees on 14 May 2026. This marks the operational start of the scheme in the state, aiming to support traditional artisans and craftspeople.

Background

PM Vishwakarma Yojana was launched on 17 September 2023 to provide holistic support to artisans and craftspeople working with hands and tools in 18 traditional trades. The scheme covers trades such as carpenter, boat maker, blacksmith, metal artisan, tool maker, locksmith, goldsmith, potter, sculptor/stone carver, cobbler/shoemaker, mason, basket/mat/broom maker, traditional toy maker, barber, garland maker, washerman, tailor, and fishing net maker.
