Why in news
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs released an update on PMAY-U 2.0, launched on 01.09.2024, to provide pucca houses with basic amenities to eligible urban beneficiaries. As of 13.07.2026, over 99 lakh houses have been completed and handed over under the mission.
Background
PMAY-U was launched on 25.06.2015 to provide housing for all urban poor. Based on lessons learned, PMAY-U 2.0 was launched as a mission mode for an additional one crore beneficiaries.
Key facts
PMAY-U 2.0 launched on 01.09.2024 as 'Housing for All' mission for urban areas.
Implemented through four verticals: Beneficiary-Led Construction (BLC), Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP), Affordable Rental Housing (ARH), and Interest Subsidy Scheme (ISS).
Demand-driven approach; no fixed targets by central government.
Total 127.68 lakh houses approved so far, including 16.20 lakh under PMAY-U 2.0.
As of 13.07.2026, 121.03 lakh houses grounded and 99.07 lakh completed and handed over.
For Jammu & Kashmir, 45,982 houses approved (2,120 under PMAY-U 2.0), 43,907 grounded, 35,961 completed.
ARH vertical aims to provide affordable rental housing for migrants, industrial workers, working women, students, urban poor.
ARH implemented via two models: Model-1 (government-built vacant houses converted to ARH via PPP or agencies) and Model-2 (new construction by public/private agencies on their land).
State Level Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee (SLSMC) headed by Chief Secretary approves projects; Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee (CSMC) releases central assistance.
