Why in news

The Minister of State for Tribal Affairs informed Lok Sabha about the strengthening and expansion of Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) on 30 July 2026. The update covers institutional reforms, digital learning enhancements, and progress in school establishment across India.

Background

EMRS are residential schools set up by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs to provide quality education to tribal students while preserving local art and culture. They are established in tribal-dominated blocks with >50% ST population and at least 20,000 tribal individuals as per 2011 Census.

  8. States advised to operationalize EMRS in alternative buildings where feasible.

  9. Comprehensive operational guidelines cover academic administration, financial management, procurement, student welfare, health & safety, hostel management, and grievance redressal.
