Why in news
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has extended PMAY-U until 30 September 2026 to complete approved houses. Additionally, PMAY-U 2.0 'Housing for All' Mission was launched on 1 September 2024, aiming to assist 1 crore more beneficiaries over five years. The release provides state-wise data on house sanctions, construction, and completion, highlighting progress in Tamil Nadu and nationwide.
Background
PMAY-U was launched on 25 June 2015 to provide pucca houses with basic amenities to eligible urban beneficiaries across India. It is a demand-driven scheme implemented by states/UTs. Based on learnings, the scheme was restructured into PMAY-U 2.0 from 1 September 2024.

In Tamil Nadu, 6.86 lakh houses sanctioned (including 0.18 lakh under PMAY-U 2.0), construction started on 6.74 lakh, and 6.32 lakh completed/delivered.
Completion timeline varies by state and project category, generally 12-36 months, depending on land availability, legal approvals, and beneficiary fund arrangement.
Ministry monitors progress through review meetings, video conferences, and field visits.
Houses must comply with technical/quality standards and building bylaws; basic amenities like water, sanitation, electricity, and road connectivity are integrated.
States/UTs advised to expedite construction to meet DPR timelines.
