Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced the renaming of Bhadohi district back to Sant Ravidas Nagar, a move seen as a Dalit outreach strategy ahead of the 2027 assembly elections. BSP chief Mayawati welcomed the decision and demanded restoration of names of all districts named after Dalit icons by her government, intensifying the political battle for Dalit votes.
Background
The BJP government in Uttar Pradesh has a history of renaming places to underline its Hindutva message, including Allahabad to Prayagraj, Faizabad to Ayodhya, and Mughalsarai to Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Nagar. After the 2024 Lok Sabha setback, where Dalit votes shifted to the INDIA bloc, the BJP has launched a Dalit outreach campaign.

CM Yogi Adityanath announced that Bhadohi will be known as Sant Ravidas Nagar again.
The announcement was made at Seer Goverdhanpur, Varanasi, the birthplace of Sant Ravidas, during a Samajik Samarasta Sankalp meeting on July 29.
Yogi also said his government restored the name of Baba Saheb Ambedkar Medical College, Kannauj, which was renamed by the Samajwadi Party government.
Mayawati demanded restoration of names of all districts named after Dalit icons, including Kasganj, which was renamed Kanshi Ram Nagar by her government.
Mayawati requested the renaming of Kasganj before October 9, the death anniversary of Kanshi Ram, or on that day.
The BJP launched the Shri Guru Ravidas Maharaj Samrasta Sankalp Abhiyan from July 29 to February 20, 2027, across Uttar Pradesh.
The BJP's Scheduled Caste Morcha national president Lal Singh Arya said the party will highlight contributions of Bhimrao Ambedkar and other Dalit icons.
The BJP had earlier renamed Allahabad as Prayagraj, Faizabad as Ayodhya, and Mughalsarai as Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Nagar after coming to power in 2017.
