The Ministry of Education informed Lok Sabha about the Supreme Court's decision extending the deadline for acquiring Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) qualification to 31.08.2028. This decision impacts teachers appointed before 2013 and clarifies TET's mandatory status under the RTE Act.
Background
The RTE Act, 2009, under Section 23, prescribes minimum qualifications for teachers, including TET. The Supreme Court on 01.09.2025 ruled TET mandatory for appointments in schools covered by the Act. Following review petitions, the Court on 29.05.2026 extended the deadline from 31.08.2027 to 31.08.2028.
