The Supreme Court has directed the Bihar government to remove all unauthorised structures between Nauzar Ghat and Nurpur Ghat in Patna within six weeks, highlighting serious concerns over encroachments on the Ganga and Yamuna river basins. The court also ordered status quo on ongoing construction near the Yamuna in Vrindavan, Mathura district, to prevent shrinking of the river channel.
Background
The case stems from a petition filed by Ashok Kumar Sinha. The National Mission for Clean Ganga Authority had been monitoring the status of river conservation across multiple states. The court had earlier sought a status report from the Centre on March 12, 2026.
