Why in news
The Ministry of Rural Development released updated progress data for the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G), showing that 33.54 lakh houses were sanctioned and 35.54 lakh completed by June 2026 for the year 2025-26. This update highlights the scheme's ongoing implementation and the remaining 1.06 crore houses to be completed against the cumulative target, with a focus on states like Jharkhand.
Background
PMAY-G is a flagship scheme of the Government of India aimed at providing pucca houses to all eligible rural households. The scheme was launched in 2016 and has been implemented in phases, with Phase-2 approved up to March 2029 to complete an additional 2 crore houses.

For 2025-26, as of June 2026, 33.54 lakh houses sanctioned and 35.54 lakh houses completed (including previous years' sanctions).
Jharkhand: 1.48 lakh houses sanctioned and 0.68 lakh houses completed during this period.
Cumulative target allocated to states/UTs: 4.18 crore houses; sanctioned: 3.92 crore; completed: 3.11 crore; remaining to be completed: 1.06 crore.
Financial assistance: ₹1.20 lakh in plains, ₹1.30 lakh in northeastern states, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and J&K/Ladakh.
Convergence: ₹12,000 for toilet under SBM-G, wage employment under MGNREGA, drinking water under JJM, electricity, LPG under PMUY, and SHG linkage for women.
National convergence: 3.10 crore houses with toilets, 2.45 crore with water connections, 3.08 crore with electricity, 2.91 crore with LPG, and 1.35 crore families linked to SHGs.
Reasons for delay: beneficiary reluctance, permanent migration, disputed succession, land allocation delays, credit confirmation delays, elections, and material unavailability.
Phase-2 of PMAY-G approved up to March 2029 to complete additional 2 crore houses.
Steps to accelerate: timely target allocation, fund release, regular reviews, dashboard monitoring, workshops, and rural mason training.
States/UTs are primary implementation authorities at ground level.
