Why in news
The government reiterated its resolve to boost the livestock and dairy sector through targeted schemes and infrastructure development. It also clarified that no comprehensive national livestock development law is proposed, as animal husbandry is a state subject under Article 246(3).
Background
Animal husbandry is a state subject under the Constitution. The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD) supports states through various central schemes. India is the world's largest milk producer and has seen significant growth in milk and egg production over the past decade.

Milk production increased 70% from 146.31 MT (2014-15) to 248 MT (2024-25).
Egg production increased 90% from 78.48 billion (2014-15) to 149.11 billion (2024-25).
