Ladakh's Lieutenant Governor declared 23 heritage sites as protected monuments under the Jammu and Kashmir Ancient Monuments Preservation Act. This move provides legal protection to the region's archaeological, historical, and cultural heritage, enabling conservation and prevention of encroachments.
Background
Ladakh has a rich heritage of ancient rock carvings, forts, and caves. Previously, these sites lacked legal protection, making them vulnerable to damage and encroachment. The declaration under the Act now grants them official protected status.

Sites include Petroglyph Sharnos, Maitreya Buddha rock carving at Shey, Tingmosgang fort, Ancient Caves at Saspol, Sumoor fort (Leh district), and rock inscriptions at Yourbaltak (Kargil district).
