The Government of India has appointed Dr. Srinivas Kumar Tumalla as the new Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES). This appointment is significant as India accelerates its Deep Ocean Mission, improves climate modeling, and strengthens early warning systems for marine disasters.
Background
Dr. Tumalla is an internationally renowned oceanographer and scientific leader with over three decades of experience in remote sensing, satellite oceanography, coastal disaster mitigation, and disaster management. He previously served as Director of INCOIS and as head of the IOTWMS Secretariat at UNESCO-IOC in Perth, Australia.

Dr. Srinivas Kumar Tumalla appointed Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC).
Appointment effective from date of assumption of charge for a period of two years or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
He has over 30 years of experience in remote sensing, satellite oceanography, coastal disaster mitigation, and disaster management.
He led the Indian Tsunami Early Warning System (ITEWS) at INCOIS after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.
As Director of INCOIS (Aug 2020 onwards), he advanced Potential Fishing Zone advisories, Coral Reef Bleaching Warning System, and multi-hazard vulnerability mapping.
He served as head of the ICG/IOTWMS Secretariat at UNESCO-IOC, Perth, Australia, leading a 28-member country regional tsunami warning network.
Recipient of the National Geoscience Award (2010) for pioneering contributions to India's tsunami early warning system.
Recipient of the Indian National Geospatial Award (2008) for innovative use of geospatial technologies in disaster mitigation and marine resource mapping.
Published over 100 peer-reviewed scientific papers and served as Vice-Chair of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission.
