Background

The SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 was enacted to prevent atrocities against Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. The Protection of Civil Rights Act, 1955 deals with offences related to untouchability. A central-level committee was constituted on March 29, 2006, under the chairpersonship of the Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment to review implementation.
