Why in news

Bihar and Jharkhand are set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formalize the sharing of Sone river waters, ending a dispute that has persisted since Jharkhand's creation in 2000. The Union government is finalizing the signing date, with both states having completed internal approvals.

The Sone river water sharing dispute arose after Jharkhand was carved out of Bihar in November 2000. The Bansagar Agreement of 1973, which allocated 7.75 million acre-feet (MAF) of Sone water to undivided Bihar, continued post-bifurcation but the division between the two successor states remained unresolved for nearly 25 years.
