Centre appoints Harjit Singh Grewal as National Minorities Commission chairperson
UPSC / SSC current affairs note · Polity
Why in news
The Centre appointed Harjit Singh Grewal, a senior Jat Sikh BJP leader from Punjab, as chairperson of the National Commission for Minorities. This move is seen as a strategic effort to deepen the BJP's rural reach in Punjab ahead of an independent political push, especially after the collapse of its alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal.
Background
The National Commission for Minorities is a statutory body set up under the National Commission for Minorities Act, 1992. It monitors the implementation of safeguards for religious and linguistic minorities in India. The post had been vacant since the previous commission, headed by Iqbal Singh Lalpura, completed its tenure.
Key facts
Harjit Singh Grewal appointed chairperson of National Commission for Minorities (NCM) by the BJP-led Centre.
Munawari Begum appointed as vice-chairperson and Glenn E Souza Ticlo as a member.
All three appointments are for a three-year tenure from the date of assuming office or until further orders.
Grewal is a Jat Sikh and one of the BJP's oldest Sikh faces in Punjab, having been with the party for decades.
He stood firmly by the BJP during the 2020-21 farmers' protests, a period when many local leaders distanced themselves.
The appointment is seen as a strategic play for the Jat Sikh vote and a reward for grassroots loyalty.
The BJP recently appointed Kewal Singh Dhillon as its first Jat Sikh state unit president in Punjab.
Both Dhillon and Grewal belong to Barnala district in the politically critical Malwa region.
The BJP aims to expand its independent political footprint in Punjab after the collapse of its alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal.
