The Delhi High Court has initiated a suo motu public interest litigation to monitor the implementation of Supreme Court directions on stray dog management in Delhi. Notices were issued to the Delhi government, MCD, and Union government, with a status report due by July 31. The court expressed concern over rising stray dog population and daily bite incidents.

Background

The Supreme Court in its May 19 judgment laid down directions for stray dog management, including not releasing sterilised/vaccinated dogs back to high-footfall public places, permitting euthanasia of rabid/aggressive dogs, and establishing designated feeding zones. The apex court directed all high courts to register suo motu cases to monitor compliance.
