Why in news

In a Lok Sabha reply on 30 July 2026, Union Minister of State for Tribal Affairs Durgadas Uike stated that representations from Van Gujjar communities in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh regarding rights under the Forest Rights Act (FRA) have been examined and forwarded to state governments. The Ministry continues to urge states to comply with FRA provisions and conducts regular review meetings.

Background

The Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006 (FRA) recognizes the rights of forest-dwelling communities. Implementation is the responsibility of state governments and UT administrations. The Van Gujjar community, a nomadic pastoralist group, has faced eviction threats and rights issues.
