Press Note 3 (April 2020) requires prior government approval for FDI from countries sharing land border with India, introduced to prevent opportunistic takeovers during COVID-19.

In FY26, India approved only 1 Chinese FDI proposal worth Rs 1 crore.
Hong Kong got 13 approvals worth Rs 610.42 crore in FY26.
Total 63 FDI proposals approved in FY26 with value Rs 10,292.67 crore ($1.18 billion).
Singapore led with 5 proposals worth Rs 3,259.88 crore.
UK had 5 proposals worth Rs 2,477.67 crore; Thailand 2 proposals worth Rs 1,600 crore.
March 2026 revision allowed non-controlling beneficial ownership up to 10% from land border countries via automatic route, but not for China/Hong Kong.

China's cumulative FDI (Apr 2000-Mar 2026) ranked 23rd, 0.32% share, $2.51 billion.

In FY25, India approved only 1 Chinese proposal worth Rs 28.71 crore.
