Why in news
The Bill was passed by both Houses of Parliament in April 2026, formally designating Amaravati as the capital of Andhra Pradesh. This resolves a long-standing political and administrative issue following the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in 2014.
Background
The Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014 bifurcated the state into Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. It provided for Hyderabad as a common capital for 10 years, after which Hyderabad would become the capital of Telangana and a new capital would be established for Andhra Pradesh. The 2026 Amendment Bill formalizes Amaravati as that new capital.
