MDONER USP Initiative: Parliamentary Committee Meeting on NE Development
UPSC / SSC current affairs note · Polity
Why in news
Union Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia chaired a meeting of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDONER) to review the progress of the ministry's flagship 'Unique Selling Proposition' (USP) initiative. The meeting focused on advancing PM Modi's vision of a self-reliant and globally competitive Northeast, with discussions on market access, value addition, branding, logistics, and export promotion.
Background
The USP initiative is a state-driven program under MDONER where each North Eastern state identifies a flagship product based on its comparative advantages. The ministry acts as a coordinator, bringing together central ministries, state governments, FPOs, industry partners, and financial institutions to build globally competitive value chains.
Key facts
The meeting was chaired by Union Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, with MoS Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, MPs from all eight 'Ashtalakshmi' states, and senior MDONER officials.
The USP initiative is fundamentally state-driven; each state government identifies its flagship product based on local strengths and aspirations.
MDONER's role is to coordinate, synergize with central ministries and state governments, and act as an aggregator under a 'Whole-of-Government' approach.
Eight key missions are currently being implemented: Kiwi Mission (Arunachal Pradesh), Muga Silk Mission (Assam), Lakadong Turmeric Mission (Meghalaya), Ginger Mission (Mizoram), Coffee Mission (Nagaland), Organic Farming Mission (Sikkim), and Queen Pineapple Mission (Tripura).
The immediate strategy is to successfully establish one flagship product per state before expanding to other sectors in later phases.
Product overlap between states is acceptable if a state has a specific competitive advantage or market recognition.
Sikkim is highlighted as India's only 100% organic state, giving it a significant advantage in global markets.
The discussion emphasized strengthening branding, logistics, and export readiness through airports, parliamentary outlets, and special marketing platforms.
