Why in news
The Union Cabinet has cleared the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, which will make insulting or obstructing the singing of Vande Mataram a punishable offence. The bill is listed for introduction in Lok Sabha in the Parliament session starting July 20, 2026. This move follows recent instances where the song was allegedly not given due respect by state governments or minority groups.
