Union Minister for Jal Shakti chaired a meeting with the Chief Ministers of Chhattisgarh and Odisha to amicably resolve the long-standing Mahanadi water dispute. This meeting marks a significant step in the government's ongoing efforts to resolve inter-state water disputes through dialogue, technical cooperation, and cooperative federalism.
Background
The Mahanadi water dispute between Odisha and Chhattisgarh has been ongoing for several years. On 12 March 2018, the Government of India constituted the Mahanadi Water Disputes Tribunal (MWDT) under the Inter-State River Water Disputes Act, 1956, following a request from Odisha. The tribunal's tenure has been extended to allow all parties sufficient opportunity to present their cases. Recently, both states have expressed willingness to reach an amicable solution through mutual cooperation and technical discussions.

The Mahanadi Water Disputes Tribunal (MWDT) was constituted on 12 March 2018 under the Inter-State River Water Disputes Act, 1956.
An extended technical committee, chaired by the Chairman of the Central Water Commission (CWC), has been formed with representatives from both states; its first meeting was held on 29 July 2026.
The minister highlighted recent successes like the Yamuna water project agreement, resolution of Narmada water disputes tribunal implementation issues, and consensus on the modified Parvati-Kalisindh-Chambal (MPKC) link project.
Both CMs reiterated their commitment to constructive technical discussions and appreciated the assistance from the Ministry of Jal Shakti and CWC.
The goal is to create a long-term, fair, and sustainable framework for Mahanadi basin management.
