SC raps meagre compensation for retired HC judges, seeks uniform guidelines

Why in news
The Supreme Court has taken suo motu exception to the low and varying compensation provided to retired High Court chief justices and judges across states. It directed the Union government to form a committee within two weeks to lay down uniform pan-India guidelines for basic minimum security and services to ensure a dignified post-retirement life.
Background
Retired High Court judges currently receive compensation and facilities that vary widely from state to state. The issue came to light when the Uttar Pradesh government challenged an interim order of the Allahabad High Court directing it to provide security to retired judges, despite paying only Rs 60,000-65,000 for security, driver, domestic help, secretarial services, telephone, and internet.

The Court took exception to UP government's challenge to Allahabad HC's interim order on security for retired judges.
UP pays Rs 65,000 to retired Chief Justices and Rs 60,000 to retired judges for all post-retirement facilities.
The Court noted that HC judges decide sensitive matters and have genuine security concerns post-retirement.
CJI remarked that Rs 60,000 cannot cover a driver and domestic help, and judges need basic minimum facilities for a dignified life.
The Court asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to impress upon the Centre to form a committee within two weeks.
The committee will study issues faced by retired HC judges and submit recommendations within three months.
The recommendations will lay down basic guidelines on states' obligations to extend facilities to retired judges.
The Court clarified it is not seeking luxurious life but dignified life for retired judges.
The Centre agreed to constitute the committee as requested by the Supreme Court.
