Indian Railways has electrified 99.6% of its broad gauge network, making it the second most electrified railway system globally after Switzerland. This achievement marks a major infrastructure transformation over the past decade, with significant reductions in diesel consumption and carbon emissions.
Background
Electrification of Indian Railways began decades ago, but the pace accelerated dramatically after 2014. The government adopted a mission-mode approach to electrify the entire broad gauge network, aiming for 100% electrification. This shift aligns with India's climate commitments and energy security goals.

99.6% of Indian Railways' broad gauge network is now electrified.
Between 2014 and 2026, 48,072 route km were electrified, compared to 21,801 km in the ~60 years before 2014.
Diesel consumption for train operations dropped from 293 crore litres in 2015-16 to 108 crore litres in 2024-25, saving foreign exchange.
Rail transport emits about 89% less CO₂ per tonne-km than road transport (11.5 g vs 101 g).
Over 1,260 MW of solar and wind energy capacity has been commissioned for railway use.
India ranks second globally in railway electrification after Switzerland (100%), ahead of China (82%), Spain (67%), Japan (64%), France (60%), and UK (39%).
All new line and multi-tracking projects are being approved and built with electrification.
