Under Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0, Nagpur's Bhandewadi dumpsite has been scientifically remediated and converted into a modern waste processing facility. Over 10 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste were processed, reclaiming 55 acres of land. This serves as a model for urban local bodies aiming for zero dumpsite targets.

Background

Nagpur, a major urban and economic hub in central India, faced rapid urbanization and a population exceeding 30 lakh, leading to increased solid waste generation. The Bhandewadi dumping yard became a large legacy waste site, posing environmental and operational challenges. The Nagpur Municipal Corporation undertook a scientific remediation project to transform it into a sustainable waste processing system aligned with circular economy principles.
