Within 48 hours, India achieved two major milestones: the successful launch of Vikram-1, the first privately developed orbital rocket by Skyroot Aerospace, and the flagging off of India's first indigenously built hydrogen-powered train by PM Modi. Background
India's space sector was opened to private participation under the Indian Space Policy 2023. Hydrogen train technology is part of India's push for clean energy in railways, with only a few nations currently using it.
Key facts
Vikram-1 was launched by Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace under Mission Aagaman from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota.
It is India's first privately developed orbital launch vehicle, capable of placing satellites into stable Earth orbit.
The rocket stands 24 metres tall, has an all-carbon composite structure, and uses 3D-printed components.
Vikram-1 can carry up to 350 kg payload to a 450-km Low Earth Orbit (LEO) at 60-degree inclination.
It features a four-stage configuration: three solid-fuel stages and a liquid-fuelled orbital adjustment module.
The hydrogen-powered train was flagged off by PM Modi, making India one of the few nations with this clean-energy rail technology.
Both milestones were achieved within a span of less than 48 hours.
