Water metro systems are being developed as an alternative mode of urban public transport, leveraging inland waterways. The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, has been tasked with identifying potential locations and conducting feasibility studies. The guidelines will provide a framework for planning, implementation, and safety standards.

The guidelines will cover zero/low emission technology framework, standardization requirements, financing structures, environmental safety, and inter-ministerial coordination.
The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has conducted feasibility studies for urban water metro systems at 18 identified locations across the country.
Feasibility studies have been completed for 15 locations.
Four hybrid electric vessels have been deployed in Varanasi, Ayodhya, Patna, and Kolkata.
A hydrogen fuel cell vessel has been deployed in Varanasi.
The information was provided by the Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.
