Why in news
The Maharashtra government announced a comprehensive ambulance policy to make emergency medical transport more efficient and accountable. The policy will bring all registered ambulances under real-time digital monitoring, addressing the lack of a unified system for citizens to access ambulance information.
Background
Currently, Maharashtra has around 1,076 ambulances under the MEMS-108 PPP project and an estimated 4,500-5,000 private and NGO-run ambulances, but no unified system exists for location, availability, response time, facilities, or fare information.

The policy aims to streamline ambulance registration, dispatch, response time, fare regulation, and hospital integration.
An integrated digital platform with four separate apps is proposed for citizens, drivers, ambulance tablets, and authorities (RTO and health department).
The citizen app will allow locating nearest ambulance, live tracking, estimated arrival time, video call guidance, and fare estimation.
The driver app will include duty status, call acceptance/rejection, navigation, training records, and performance monitoring.
Tablets in ambulances will record patient details, vital signs, treatment, video communication with hospitals, and monitor equipment like oxygen units and defibrillators.
RTO and health department will have a central dashboard for real-time location and operational stats.
The policy is announced by Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik on August 1, 2026.
