The government recently conducted e-auctions for 730 FM channels in 234 new cities in July 2025. The Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting informed Rajya Sabha that 386 private FM radio channels are currently operational, with a mandate to air 20% local content to promote regional culture.
Background
Private FM radio in India has evolved through policy phases. The third phase policy allows broadcasters access to Prasar Bharati towers for faster rollout. The government issues Letters of Intent (LOI) and executes Grant of Permission Agreements (GOPA) with clear timelines, especially for LWE and aspirational districts.
