Census 2027 Phase 1: Self-Enumeration Begins in Tamil Nadu and Tripura

Why in news
Self-enumeration for the first phase of Census 2027 has started in Tamil Nadu and Tripura, continuing the digital rollout. This marks a significant step in India's first digitally-enabled census, with 29 states/UTs already completing phase 1.
Background
India conducts a census every 10 years, with the last being 2011. Census 2027 is the first to use digital methods (mobile app and self-enumeration portal) alongside traditional door-to-door enumeration, under the Census Act, 1948.
Key facts
Self-enumeration for House listing and Housing Census (HLO) began in Tamil Nadu and Tripura on 17 July 2026, available until 31 July 2026.
Field enumeration by enumerators will follow from 1 August to 30 August 2026 in these states.
Residents can self-enumerate via official portal se.census.gov.in and receive a Self-Enumeration ID (SE ID) to share with enumerators.
Kerala and Nagaland are currently undergoing field enumeration for HLO until 30 July 2026.
29 states/UTs have completed phase 1: Andaman & Nicobar, Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu, Delhi, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Lakshadweep, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Odisha, Puducherry, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand.
Census 2027 uses a dedicated mobile app for data collection, while retaining traditional door-to-door enumeration for complete coverage.
A structured questionnaire with 33 questions collects data on housing, family details, amenities, and assets.
All information collected under the Census Act, 1948 is confidential and used only for statistical analysis and development planning.
