Why in news

The Ministry of Panchayati Raj conducted virtual outreach workshops on 13-14 July 2026 under the 'Aatmanirbhar Panchayat' programme, covering seven states. This initiative aims to enhance the financial self-reliance of Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) by boosting their Own Source Revenue (OSR). The programme has now expanded to ten states, inviting innovative project proposals from eligible panchayats.

Background

The Aatmanirbhar Panchayat programme is part of the Rashtriya Gram Swaraj Abhiyan (RGSA) and focuses on strengthening the financial autonomy of panchayats through OSR enhancement. Earlier workshops were held in Hyderabad (Telangana), Gandhinagar (Gujarat), and Kochi (Kerala).
