Why in news
The Ministry of Textiles launched the National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM) in 2020 to promote the technical textiles sector. Recently, the domestic technical textile industry recorded a net trade surplus of ₹3,420.20 crore in FY 2025-26, with exports of ₹29,217.60 crore and imports of ₹25,797.40 crore. The government has also organized 47 national and international conferences under NTTM to promote applications and market development.

Technical textiles are functional textiles used for non-aesthetic purposes, such as agricultural textiles, geotextiles, medical textiles, industrial textiles, protective textiles, and sports technology. India's technical textile sector has been identified as a key growth area, with the government implementing schemes like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Textiles to boost manufacturing and exports.
