Why in news

The latest monthly PLFS data for June 2026 shows the national unemployment rate unchanged at 5.5%, but reveals a worrying rise in female unemployment to 5.9% and a continued decline in female labour force participation, especially in rural areas. This highlights persistent gender disparities in India's labour market.

Background

The Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) is conducted by the National Sample Survey Office (NSO) to provide quarterly and monthly estimates of key labour market indicators. The current weekly status (CWS) measures activity based on the reference week. Female LFPR in India has historically been low, and recent trends show a decline after a brief recovery.
