The Maharashtra government has ended the compulsory one-year social obligatory service (MBBS bond) for doctors, effective immediately via a government resolution on July 23, 2026. This move addresses the backlog of graduates waiting for postings, which had delayed their admission to postgraduate courses.
Background
The bond service required MBBS graduates from government, municipal, and aided colleges, as well as scholarship recipients in private colleges, to serve one year in public health facilities. Over time, the number of medical colleges and graduates increased, but bond service posts did not keep pace, causing long waits.
