Why in news
The government has released updated data on its financial inclusion schemes, showing significant progress in banking access, social security, and credit. As of July 2026, PMJDY accounts have reached 58.63 crore with deposits over ₹3.08 lakh crore, and PMMY loans have crossed 59.14 crore. This highlights the ongoing impact of the National Mission for Financial Inclusion (NMFI) launched in 2014.
Background
The National Mission for Financial Inclusion (NMFI), also known as Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), was launched in August 2014 to provide universal banking services to every unbanked household. It is guided by principles of banking the unbanked, securing the unsecured, and funding the unfunded. The mission encompasses multiple schemes including insurance (PMJJBY, PMSBY), pension (APY), and credit (PMMY, Stand-Up India).
Key facts
As of 01.07.2026, 58.63 crore PMJDY accounts have been opened with total deposits of ₹3,08,333 crore.
55.74% (32.68 crore) of PMJDY accounts are held by women, and 77.80% (45.62 crore) are in rural and semi-urban areas.
Under PMJJBY, 27.84 crore enrollments provide life insurance cover of ₹2 lakh for death from any cause.
Under PMSBY, 58.78 crore enrollments provide accident insurance cover of ₹2 lakh for death/permanent total disability and ₹1 lakh for partial disability.
Under APY, 9.29 crore enrollments (as of 30.06.2026) provide monthly pension to eligible subscribers.
Under PMMY, 59.14 crore loans amounting to ₹41.71 lakh crore have been sanctioned (as of 26.06.2026) for collateral-free institutional credit up to ₹20 lakh.
Under Stand-Up India, 2.75 lakh loans worth ₹62,790 crore have been sanctioned (as of 31.03.2025) for SC/ST and women entrepreneurs.
