Background
The government has been working towards universal banking coverage through a network of bank branches, business correspondents, and India Post Payments Banks. The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) was launched in 2014 to ensure access to financial services.
Key facts
99.92% of inhabited villages (6,00,868 out of 6,01,328) have banking facilities within 5 km as per Jan Dhan Darshak (JDD) app data.
As of 17.07.2026, there are over 1.81 lakh bank branches, 17.36 lakh business correspondents (BCs), and 1.65 lakh IPPB centers.
Total PMJDY accounts stand at 58.77 crore with deposits of ₹3,12,414 crore.
RBI allows banks to open branches anywhere without prior permission, provided 25% of new branches are in unbanked rural areas.
State Level Bankers' Committee (SLBC) / UT Level Bankers' Committee (UTLBC) monitor the opening of banking outlets in unbanked areas.
Digital initiatives for agriculture credit include Jan Samarth Portal, e-KYC app by NABARD, Krishika, and Kisan Rin Portal (KRP) launched in September 2023.
India Digital Payment Intelligence Corporation (IDPIC) established to share fraud-related information in real-time using AI/ML and big data analytics.
RBI issued Master Directions on Digital Payment Security Controls in February 2021 to address web and mobile app threats.
