The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) tabled data in Parliament projecting a 3.2% decline in road crash deaths in 2026 despite an increase in accidents. Uttar Pradesh continues to record the highest number of road fatalities, and National Highways account for a significant share of deaths.
Background
Road crash deaths in India have risen by 25.5% over the past decade, from 146,133 in 2015 to 183,382 in 2025. The government has been using the electronic Detailed Accident Report (e-DAR) portal to collect real-time accident data from states.
Key facts
India is projected to record around 177,500 road fatalities in 2026, a 3.2% decline from 183,434 deaths in 2025.
Total road accidents are estimated to rise 1.3% to about 520,200 in 2026, compared with 513,474 in 2025.
As of July 27, 2026, India recorded 296,447 road accidents and 101,139 fatalities.
Uttar Pradesh reported the highest road deaths (14,794) till July 27, followed by Tamil Nadu (10,298), Maharashtra (9,279), and Madhya Pradesh (8,098).
Tamil Nadu recorded the highest number of crashes (39,666), followed by Madhya Pradesh (34,947), Uttar Pradesh (26,718), and Karnataka (24,929).
National Highways, including expressways, accounted for 77,234 accidents and 62,122 fatalities (35% of total) till July 27.
Over-speeding was the biggest traffic rule violation, causing 46,075 accidents in 2026, followed by drunken driving (1,443), wrong-side driving/lane indiscipline (2,397), and jumping red lights (data not fully provided).
Data for 2025 and 2026 is sourced from the e-DAR portal, while earlier years use official MoRTH data.
