UPI recorded its highest ever monthly transaction volume in July 2026, with 23.66 billion transactions worth Rs 29.88 lakh crore. This marks a significant milestone for India's digital payments ecosystem, reflecting growing adoption and usage.
Background
UPI is a real-time payment system developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) that facilitates inter-bank transactions through mobile phones. It has become the most popular digital payment method in India, with increasing global expansion.

UPI processed 23.66 billion transactions in July 2026, the highest ever monthly volume.
Transaction value stood at Rs 29.88 lakh crore, marginally below the all-time high of Rs 29.90 lakh crore recorded in the same month.
Daily average: 763 million transactions and Rs 96,383 crore in value.
Month-on-month growth: volume up 4.1% from 22.72 billion in June; value up 3.3% from Rs 28.92 lakh crore.
Year-on-year growth: volume up 22%, value up 19%.
Previous record was 23.20 billion transactions in May 2026.
PhonePe led the UPI ecosystem in June with 10.48 billion transactions, followed by Google Pay and Paytm.
WhatsApp surpassed CRED in UPI transaction volume in June, processing 150.48 million transactions vs CRED's 141.78 million.
UPI merchant payments are now live in 10 international markets: Bhutan, Singapore, UAE, France, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Qatar, Cambodia, and Maldives.
Greece supports person-to-person transfers; Singapore and Nepal also have remittance linkages.
