The Union Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved the four-laning of the Khagaria-Purnia section of NH-31 and NH-231 in Bihar at a cost of ₹3,936.05 crore. This upgrade aims to improve connectivity for the region's agricultural produce, especially bananas and makhana, reducing transit losses and enhancing market access.
Background
The Seemanchal region of Bihar has historically faced connectivity challenges due to narrow roads, sharp curves, and vulnerability to floods from the Kosi and Ganga rivers. The existing two-lane corridor often causes delays, affecting perishable crops like bananas. The project seeks to address these long-standing infrastructure gaps.
Key facts
The Khagaria-Purnia section of NH-31 and NH-231 will be upgraded to a four-lane highway at a cost of ₹3,936.05 crore.
The project was approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA).
Travel time between key destinations in the region is expected to reduce from 3.5-4 hours to 1.5-2 hours.
The upgrade will include flood-resilient engineering measures such as improved drainage systems and stronger pavement structures.
The corridor will connect five PM Gati Shakti economic nodes: one textile cluster, two mega food parks, and two fisheries and seafood parks.
It will also link four major railway stations and improve interstate connectivity with West Bengal and Jharkhand.
The region is a major producer of bananas (Khagaria) and makhana (Purnia), which are highly perishable and benefit from faster transport.
The project addresses congestion in densely populated urban and semi-urban areas of Khagaria, Bhagalpur, Katihar, and Purnia districts.
