Why in news

India's equity markets are set to implement a major operational change from August 3, 2026, with the introduction of a Closing Auction Session (CAS) for eligible F&O stocks. This will alter how closing prices are determined, extend derivatives trading by 10 minutes, and create different closing times across market segments. The change is significant for traders, institutional investors, and market intermediaries.

Background

Currently, the closing price of stocks is calculated using the Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP) of trades in the last part of the trading session. The new mechanism will use an auction-based approach to determine a single equilibrium price for F&O stocks.

Key facts

in5points
  1. From August 3, 2026, eligible F&O stocks will have a Closing Auction Session (CAS) to determine their closing price.

  2. Non-F&O stocks will continue trading until 3:30 PM as before.

  3. F&O stocks in the cash market will trade continuously only until 3:15 PM, then enter the CAS which runs until 3:35 PM.

  4. Stock and index derivatives will trade until 3:40 PM, an extension of 10 minutes from the current 3:30 PM close.

  5. The post-close session will remain between 3:50 PM and 4:00 PM.

  6. The CAS process: 3:15-3:20 PM transition and reference price calculation; 3:20-3:25 PM market and limit orders; 3:25-3:30 PM only limit orders, no modifications/cancellations; 3:28-3:30 PM random order-entry closure; 3:30-3:35 PM order matching and final price discovery.

  7. The closing price for F&O stocks will be determined by matching all eligible buy and sell orders at a single equilibrium price.

  8. The VWAP calculation window for derivatives will be revised to include trades from 3:10 PM to 3:40 PM, instead of the earlier 30-minute window ending at 3:30 PM.

  9. The auction-based mechanism aims to reduce the impact of large trades on closing prices and improve price discovery.
