Why in news
The launch of the 8th tranche auction of 20 critical and strategic mineral blocks marks a significant step in India's efforts to strengthen mineral security, reduce import dependence, and build robust supply chains for clean energy, defense, and advanced manufacturing. This aligns with the government's ongoing reforms in the mining sector under the 'India Mining Week 2026' initiative.
Background
India has been progressively auctioning critical mineral blocks to secure supplies of minerals essential for high-tech and green technologies. The Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957 was amended to allow private sector participation and commercial mining. Previous tranches have seen successful auctions, with 56 out of 88 offered blocks already auctioned.
Key facts
Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy and Minister of State Satish Chandra Dubey launched the 8th tranche of e-auction for 20 critical mineral blocks during the 'India Mining Week 2026' curtain raiser event.
The 20 blocks are spread across 9 states: Andhra Pradesh (2), Bihar (3), Chhattisgarh (5), Maharashtra (2), Odisha (3), Punjab (1), Rajasthan (2), Telangana (1), and West Bengal (1).
Minerals offered include molybdenum, graphite, glauconite, vanadium, gallium, titanium, rare earth elements (REE), bauxite, aluminous laterite, phosphorite, limestone, potash, halite, tungsten, lithium, caesium, rubidium, and others.
This tranche includes 13 newly identified blocks and 7 blocks re-offered under the Mineral (Auction) Rules.
The cumulative number of critical mineral blocks offered now stands at 88, of which 56 have been successfully auctioned.
The auction follows a transparent two-stage 'Ascending Forward Auction' process conducted online.
Bid document sale started on 15 July 2026; last date for purchase is 14 September 2026 (5:00 PM IST); bid submission deadline is 21 September 2026 (5:00 PM IST).
The initiative aims to reduce import dependence and support clean energy technologies, electric mobility, advanced manufacturing, fertilizers, defense, aerospace, electronics, and other strategic industries.
