Background
UPI is a real-time payment system developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), an initiative of the RBI and the Indian Banks' Association. It has been a key driver of digital payments in India since its launch in 2016, enabling instant money transfers between bank accounts via mobile platforms.

UPI processed 23.66 billion transactions in July 2026, up from 22.72 billion in June 2026.
Transaction value reached Rs 29.88 lakh crore in July 2026, surpassing the previous high of Rs 29.9 lakh crore in May 2026.
Year-on-year, UPI transaction value rose 19% from Rs 25.08 lakh crore in July 2025.
May 2026 had recorded 23.2 billion transactions, which was the prior volume record.
UPI is operational in about 10 countries, including UAE, Singapore, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, France, Mauritius, and Qatar.
