Why in news

The Maharashtra government is set to disburse the first tranche of its farm loan waiver to over 930,000 farmers starting Tuesday, following the announcement of a ₹41,268 crore waiver for 5.45 million farmers last month. This marks a significant step in implementing a major state agricultural relief scheme.

Background

The waiver was announced in July 2026 by the Maharashtra government to provide relief to farmers with crop loans. The scheme includes full waiver for loans up to ₹2 lakh, one-time settlement for larger loans, and incentives for regular repayers. A committee headed by Praveen Pardeshi recommended exclusions, such as farmers who benefited from the 2019 waiver.
