Why in news
The Maldives Monetary Authority announced the successful launch of the integration between Maldives' instant payment system 'Fawara' and India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) on 30 July 2026. This marks a transformative achievement in cross-border digital financial connectivity and bilateral economic cooperation between the two countries.
Background
An agreement for the Fawara-UPI integration was signed between NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) and the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) in July 2025. After a rapid 10-day timeline for testing, certification, onboarding, and live verification, the corridor became fully operational.
Key facts
Maldives citizens can now transfer funds in real-time to UPI-enabled bank accounts in India using their mobile banking applications.
Transactions are initiated in Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR) and credited to recipients' accounts in Indian Rupees (INR) via UPI.
The service initially involves two local banks: Bank of Maldives PLC and Maldives Islamic Bank PLC.
Customers of these banks can initiate person-to-person (P2P) transfers directly to UPI-enabled bank accounts in India using the Fawara payment rail.
Permitted remittance categories include family maintenance-related remittances under both foreign inward and outward remittances, and gift-related remittances under foreign outward remittances.
The implementation reflects close collaboration among MMA, RBI, NIPL, participating financial institutions, and other stakeholders.
Later phases will introduce QR-based merchant payments and other innovative digital payment use cases.
UPI is now accepted in nine countries: Cambodia, Singapore, UAE, France, Mauritius, Nepal, Bhutan, Qatar, and Sri Lanka.
